Saddle Block
The parts of the body that sit in the “saddle” are the buttocks, perineum and vagina. A saddle block is the type of anesthesia that numbs these body parts.

Salpingitis
Salpingitis refers to any inflammation occurring within the fallopian tubes.

Salpingectomy
This surgery involves the removal of one or both of the fallopian tubes. It is often performed alongside a hysterectomy.

Salpingo-oophorectomy
This term refers to the surgery to remove the fallopian tubes and ovaries. This is usually performed alongside a total hysterectomy.

Schiller Test
This examination involves coating the cervix with an iodine dye. The dye helps to detect abnormal cell presence.

Screening
Screenings are preventative examinations checking for disease even if no symptoms are present. Many screenings are performed during gynecological exams and during pregnancy.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
Any disease or condition transmitted through sexual contact. This includes HPV, HIV, syphilis, genital herpes, and others. Since the discovering of HIV, STDs have become a major health concern, especially among younger members of the community.

Speculum
Used in gynecological exams, the speculum spreads the walls of the vagina so the cervix can be examined.

Spermicides
Spermicides, often used to coat condoms or as their own form of contraception, are creams, gels, foams and suppositories that inactivate sperm through the use of chemicals.

Spinal Block
Anesthesia used to numb the lower half of the body.

Spontaneous Abortion
This is another term for miscarriage; a pregnancy is lost before the fetus can survive outside of the uterus.

Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (SIL)
This is a non-cancerous condition, occurring when a layer of abnormal cells replaces a layer of normal cells on the cervical surface. When this comes up in a pap smear test, it can mean dysplasia, CIN, or HPV.

Stage
The stage, in this instance, refers to the grading of a tumor, describing its size and how much the disease has spread. For example, uterine cancer has stages I through IV, with IV being the most advanced.

Stress Test
During this test, a patient with a full bladder coughs repeatedly. Loss of urine is recorded.

Stretch Marks
These occur often in pregnancy in areas of skin that are stretched, including the abdomen, breasts, buttocks, and legs.

Surgery
Surgeries are operations performed on the body. They have a number of purposes: to repair or remove a part of the body, or to detect the presence of disease.

Syphilis
This STD is one of the more severe. Caused by the organism treponema pallidum, it results in major health problems in later stages, and can be fatal.

Systemic Treatment
This is a cancer treatment in which substances are introduced to the bloodstream. The substances travel through the body to reach cancer cells throughout.

Systolic Blood Pressure
This higher of the two blood pressure readings measures the force of the blood as the heart contracts.
