Radiation Therapy
Also called radiotherapy, radiation therapy is a cancer treatment that uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. X-rays and gamma rays are used, sometimes by external radiation or internal radiation via materials placed in or around the tumor.

Radionuclide Scan
This is a type of imaging using a small amount of radioactive substance, injected directly into the vein. Abnormal areas and tumors are detected by measuring levels of radioactivity present in certain organs.

Real-Time
This type of ultrasound shows movement using still pictures, somewhat like a movie.

Rectocele
This is when the rectum bulges into the vaginal wall.

Rectum
The lower end of the large intestine, the rectum leads to the anus.

Recur
When something recurs, it occurs again; in terms of disease, it is the reappearance of cancer cells at the same site as before or in another location.

Recurrent Infections
If an infection occurs more than once in a certain period, it is considered recurrent.

Reflux
Instead of flowing downward, reflux urine is backed up in the urinary tract.

Resectoscope
This tool is a slender telescope meant for uterine insertion. It has an electrical wire or rollerball tip that is used to remove tissue for testing or destroy abnormal tissue inside the uterus.

Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS)
This is a condition, occurring in some newborns, where the longs are not completely mature at birth.

Rh Immunoglobin (RhIg)
This substance is given to an Rh-negative person in order to prevent their antibodies from responding to Rh-positive blood cells.

Risk Factor
Any behavior, activity, or factor that can increase the chance of developing a disease or disorder is considered a risk factor. Risk factors for cancer include smoking and exposure to radiation.

Round Ligament Pain
This is normal pain caused by the stretching of the ligament on the sides of the uterus occurring during pregnancy.

Rupture of Membranes
The “water” breaking; the rupture of membranes is the breaking of the amniotic sac, resulting in loss of fluid in a big gush.
