PROCEDURE: ESSURE

This option of birth control is a non-invasive procedure; Essure is performed in the comfort of Dr. Ghodsian's office. It begins much like any other appointment with your gynecologist. You are taken into the room where you will undergo the procedure, Essure. You will be asked to undress from the waist down and lay down on the procedure table in a lithotomy position, common for gynecological exams like a pap tests.

After a speculum is placed into the vagina, the cervix and upper vagina are cleansed and numbing medication is placed for a paracervical nerve block so no general anesthesia is used. This portion of the procedure should be no more uncomfortable than the average brief menstrual cramp. Once this is completed, you are done with the prep and the procedure; Essure can be performed.

Using a special scope through the vagina, Dr. Ghodsian places soft, flexible micro-inserts into the fallopian tubes. Because these are delivered through the vagina and cervix, no incision is needed. The body cavity is not surgically entered so many of the risks involved with permanent birth control procedures are avoided. This portion of the procedure takes between ten and fifteen minutes and may also cause mild temporary cramping.

Once the micro-inserts are placed and the scope and speculum removed, you are able to exit the office as soon as you feel comfortable and resume normal activities immediately. This preliminary part of the Essure procedure is complete. For the next three months, intercourse using a form of birth control other than Essure like condoms, birth control pills, or injections must be used. During the three month period, a natural barrier develops around the micro-inserts, which prevents sperm from reaching the eggs.

PROCEDURE: ESSURE- Three Month Confirmation Visit

Three months after the procedure, the Essure Confirmation Test will be performed using a special x-rays and a special contrast dye. This will test the position of the micro inserts and make certain the fallopian tubes are blocked. Prior to this visit, it is essential to continue using another form of birth control if you are sexually active. Once Dr. Ghodsian advises you that the confirmation test was successful, you are free of the worries of unplanned pregnancy.
